Toby the Turtle Who Danced in the Rain
Toby was not like the other turtles.
While most turtles liked to nap under warm rocks or slowly munch on leaves, Toby loved something… unusual.
He loved the rain.
Whenever dark clouds gathered and the first raindrops fell, Toby would wiggle out of his shell and spin, hop, and twirl through puddles. He danced in the mud. He splashed through streams. He even sang little songs with the thunder.
But the other animals didn’t understand.
“Why are you always wet and dirty?” asked a squirrel.
“Turtles aren’t supposed to dance,” grumbled an old badger.
“You’re weird,” whispered a group of rabbits.
Toby tried to smile. But deep down, the words hurt. So, he stopped dancing.
Days passed. Rain came, but Toby stayed inside his shell, watching quietly as drops tapped on the ground outside. The forest felt dull without his joy.
Then, one afternoon, a terrible storm rolled in — the biggest in years. Wind howled. Trees shook. The little river by the forest swelled into a rushing flood.
And in the middle of it, a tiny fox cub was stranded on a rock, too scared to move. The water rushed faster by the minute. No one knew what to do.
But Toby did.
He took a deep breath, slid into the water, and paddled through the current with steady, practiced strokes — the same movements he had mastered from years of playing in the rain.
He reached the fox, let him climb on his shell, and swam back safely. The forest watched in silence.
When the rain cleared, everyone gathered around.
“We didn’t know,” said the badger softly. “Your dancing… it made you strong.”
“You saved him,” whispered the squirrel.
“I like the rain too,” said a little rabbit, smiling.
Toby blinked, surprised. Then, slowly, a grin spread across his face.
That night, as the last drops of rain fell, Toby danced once more — but he wasn’t alone. All around him, animals joined in — splashing, spinning, and laughing beneath the stars.
And from that day on, no one ever said turtles shouldn’t dance again.
